Exeter Chiefs Gear Up for Showdown Against Reigning Champions Northampton Saints in Gallagher Premiership Round Two
After a narrow loss in Round One, the Chiefs make strategic changes as they prepare to take on the defending champions, Northampton Saints, at Franklin’s Gardens this Saturday.
The Exeter Chiefs are set to face the defending Gallagher Premiership champions, Northampton Saints, at the cinch Stadium, Franklin’s Gardens this Saturday in a highly-anticipated Round Two matchup.
After a narrow defeat in Round One against Leicester Tigers, the Chiefs have made several strategic adjustments to their lineup. However, the front row remains unchanged, with Scott Sio once again captaining the side, joined by Dan Frost at hooker and Ehren Painter, who is set to face his former team.
A key change sees Richard Capstick moving to the back row, making way for Welsh international Christ Tshiunza to join the starting pack alongside Rusi Tuima in the second row. The back row will be completed by Ethan Roots and Ross Vintcent at flanker and number eight, respectively.
Sam Maunder returns to the Gallagher Premiership, starting at scrum half, while Harvey Skinner takes on the fly half position. With Ben Hammersley currently in the return-to-play protocol following a head injury against Leicester, Olly Woodburn brings his experience to the centre, pairing up with Joe Hawkins.
Immanuel Feyi-Waboso and Josh Hodge will take their places in the back three, joined by Paul Brown-Bampoe, who made his league debut last weekend, putting in an impressive 75-minute shift.
Rob Baxter’s Strategy for Success Against Northampton Saints
Director of Rugby Rob Baxter remains confident in his squad’s ability to bounce back from the previous defeat. Speaking ahead of the game, Baxter emphasized the importance of refining their strategy to compete more effectively on the road.
“We’re ready to go this weekend. We believe we’ve developed a formula that can make us competitive away from home. We’ve addressed our weaknesses from last season’s match at Northampton and have adjusted our process to avoid the same pitfalls,” said Baxter.
Acknowledging the challenge ahead, Baxter added, “Northampton will be keen to get back on track after their result at Bath, and they’ll bring energy and vibrancy to the game at home. It’s going to be a tough test, but it’s one we’re excited to face. Our goal is to stay in the fight for 80 minutes and give ourselves the best chance of success.”
Bench and Key Returns
The Chiefs’ bench sees the return of Marcus Street, accompanied by front-row teammates Jack Yeandle and Will Goodrick-Clarke. Jack Dunne will join Martin Moloney, who is set to make his Premiership debut, as cover for the remainder of the pack. Tom Cairns, Will Haydon-Wood, and Will Rigg round out the replacements for the backs.
The upcoming match is crucial for both sides as they look to establish momentum early in the season. Fans can expect an intense and dynamic contest at Franklin’s Gardens, with the Exeter Chiefs determined to secure their first win of the campaign.
